Best Hiking Stretches?

by Theully

I'd like to know what stretching or warm up exercises are recommended for hiking.

My friend always comes back from hikes nearly crippled with some sort of injury. Do you think this could be avoided with proper stretching?

Awesome Hiking Stretches
by: Rob

Hi Theully,

Thanks for your great question. Yes, many injuries and pain also can be avoided by stretching before, and after, hiking.

Take about five minutes before and after a hike to properly stretch. Many people don't take this time to stretch and can end up suffering from a pulled muscle for days.

One challenge hikers face when stretching is that we usually don't have a comfortable place to lie down and really stretch well. So, it's good to choose stretches you can do standing up, or leaning against a tree or similar object.

Also, remember that you should stretch more than just your lower body. Your shoulders, spine, and neck also suffer from the shocks of hiking and especially carrying a pack.

This video brings a Yoga element to stretches for hiking, but in just four stretches, gives you a full body warm-up for hiking and stretches multiple parts in a single stretch. And, they are all done standing.

Plus they are easy enough for non-yoga folks (like me) to do. And guys... don't be embarrassed to do the dancer pose. It's harder than it looks!

Good luck!
