Emerald Bay is one of the most popular tourist spots and vista points around California's Lake Tahoe. But not everyone has taken the quick 1-mile hike down to the intriguing Vikingsholm--a Scandinavian style "castle" built at the head of the bay in 1929.

We went during an unusually dry winter season, so the trail was easily accessible from the park's parking area along Emerald Bay Road (Highway 89). This hike is a great intro to the area and a good preperation for longer hikes and getting acclimated to the high altitude.

With a surface elevation of 6225 ft (1897 m) Lake Tahoe is a pristine freshwater lake made from the snowmelt of the surrounding mountains. These conditions create a spectacular backdrop for hiking.

Vikinsholm was the summer home of Mrs. Lora Knight who was inspired by ancient Scandinavian architecture when planning the home. Besides the beautiful scenery, the castle-like home is worth the visit as well.

Fanette Island in the middle of Emerald Bay holds Mrs. Knight's Tea House, a 16' x 16 stone building that can be seen from almost anywhere around Emerald Bay.

Vikingsholm is located within Emerald Bay State Park and offers tours during the warmer seasons. A generous parking area is located along Emerald Bay Road (Highway 89), approximately 20 minutes from the town of South Lake Tahoe.

From the parking lot (fees required during some seasons), head towards the lake and you'll find a trailhead about 50 feet away. The trail is a steady descent for about 1 mile. Enjoy the scenery of steep rocky mountains to the South above and the lake below.

When you reach an apshalt paved road, you are close to Vikingsholm. Follow the signs pointing to the visitor center. Soon you will see the beach at the head of Emerald Bay. Have fun exploring the area, having a picnic, or taking a tour of the remarkable home!
