Why Use Trekking Poles?

by Al
(Vermont)

Out on the trails, I often see hikers with trekking poles. Are these needed for hiking?

Sometimes these folks have two, sometimes one, and sometimes they just carry them over their shoulder. And then I see a lot of hikers (the majority) without the poles.

Can anyone tell me what the benefit of using trekking poles is?

Thanks!

The wife and I both use poles. We would not go hiking without them. Just saved me from falling on ice today. Keeps my fingers from swelling and keeps your hands much warmer on cool days.

They're good!

Trekking poles help to develop chest and back muscles, instead of just lying there doing nothing.

Necessary--No, Beneficial-Yes!
by: Rob-Site Admin.

Al, thanks for the great question!

The short answer is no--trekking poles or hiking poles are not absolutely necessary for having a great hike.

But, they are very beneficial for these reasons:

1. Hike longer and stronger.
2. Prevent injuries.
3. Improve your footing on unstable ground.

I've also seen people use only one, but I think that trekking poles really become effective when you use two (one in each hand).

We have a great article on the benefits, as well as how to use and choose trekking poles.

See it here:
